Revolutionary Era- 1770's and 1780's

The American Revolutionary War eliminated the possibility of more immigration. America took its first census in 1770 which showed that there were 3 million people in the United States. In the 1770s and 1780s most of the immigrants came from Ireland and out of the 3 million Americans counted in the census about 400,000 of them were Irish. Not many people migrated to America in the 1770s and 1780s because of the war and the fighting. People didn’t want to get involved in a war. Many of the soldiers that fought in the war on the side of Britain came back to America after the war.

Old Immigrants- These immigrants came from western and northern Europe up to the middle of the 19th century. There were English, Scotish, and Irish who mostly lived in English territories. There were also Dutch, German, Swedish, and Scandinavians who settled in the new American colonies. Then there were African slaves that came and worked on plantations in America.

Many of the Old immigrants came for political reasons, social reasons and economic reasons. They wanted religious freedom, wanted to escape political unrest and violent political turmoil. Immigrants also came to America to find land in order to farm. This was why African slaves were brought over- so they could farm the large plantations.

In the picture it shows places of settlement in America. Most of the African Americans settled in the South because that was where plantations were and that was where the slaves would be working.  (http://faculty.umf.maine.edu/walter.sargent/public.www/web%20230/immigration-18th-c.jpg)
